Shalom friends,

Recent news from Israel has been both remarkable and troubling, with the departure of Prime Minister Sharon from the political scene and the election of a Hamas government over the Palestinians. We need to pray more fervently than ever for the peace of Jerusalem and the whole land of Israel. This month, UMJC President Jamie Cowen and I are traveling to Israel to seek first-hand insight into the situation there. We organized this trip in response to an invitation from a member of the Knesset who is involved with programs for the poor. He has garnered support and participation from the worldwide Christian community, and now sees the importance of involving the Messianic Jewish community as well. We, of course, share his concerns overpoverty in Israel, which is affecting 25-30 percent of the population.

Jamie and I will report back to you via a phone-in conference after we return. Please join us by dialing 1.888.346.5716, toll-free, at 8:00 PM EST [7:00 PM Central, 6:00 PM Mountain, 5:00 PM Pacific], on Thursday, March 9. The call will last about a half hour and include time for questions and answers. Hope you can make it!

In Israel we also want to bring up the plight of some Messianic believers who are undergoing harassment and abuse at the hands of one ultra-orthodox group.

Here is a letter about this situation that Jamie and I sent to the Israel Police Commissioner recently:

Commissioner Moshe Karadi
Inspector General of the Israel Police

Sir:

Messianic Jewish congregations in the United States and around the world are fervent supporters of the state of Israel. We appreciate your vital work in ensuring the security and safety of Israelis and visitors to the Land. As part of our support for Israel, we brought a solidarity tour of 300 participants to Israel in 2003, and sponsor smaller tours each year. On our tours, we have always been impressed by the professionalism and availability of Israel Police officers
In recent months, we have heard numerous reports of harassment of our fellow Messianic Jews and supporters in Arad at the hands of Gur haredi extremists. We are particularly troubled by the apparent lack of police response to what is clearly abusive and threatening behavior.

Now we are also receiving reports of similar harassment in Beersheva that occurred last Shabbat. Orthodox extremists entered private property, where Messianic Jews were congregating, to damage equipment and assault men, women, and children. Again, police response appears to have been minimal.
Please use your office to ensure proper protection for Israelis who are simply exercising their religious freedom as expressed in the Proclamation of Independence, and to defend the hard-earned reputation of the Israel Police. Thank you in advance for your time and attention to this urgent matter.

We hope to visit our fellow believers in Arad and Beersheva, who have been experiencing this persecution for many months. We will also visit other Messianic Jewish leaders throughout Israel, to strengthen our ties and see how we can be of support during these troubling times.

Every year between Passover and Shavuot (Pentecost or the Festival of Weeks), the UMJC has sponsored a seven-week prayer campaign, culminating in an offering for Shavuot, in accord with Leviticus 23:16?17: ?You must count until the day after the seventh week?fifty days; then you shall bring an offering of new grain to the Lord. You shall bring from your settlements two loaves of bread as an elevation offering . . .?

The theme of this year?s campaign and offering, ?Two Loaves? One Lineage,? links the festival offering to our solidarity with Messianic believers in Israel. This year, we will pray for Messianic Jewish congregations worldwide and in Israel, and send half the offering to the Israeli Messianic Jewish community. The Prayer Campaign begins after sundown on April 13 and concludes on Shavuot, June 1.

Our trip this month will include fact-finding for this prayer campaign and offering as well as the situation in Israel in general. Please keep us in prayer and watch for a report after we return.
