Education has always been one of the highest priorities among the Jewish people. Hillel spoke the words above a generation before Messiah came and they remain a Jewish value to this day. One of our stated purposes in the UMJC has always been ?To support the training of Messianic leaders.? Early on, we formed a Yeshiva program that provided professional training for leaders and continuing education for all interested adults. At the same time, our Education Committee began producing and cataloging curriculum materials for children and youth. In recent years our Yeshiva program has been reorganized into Messianic Jewish Theological Institute (MJTI), poised to become the first independent graduate-level Messianic Jewish seminary, with a continuing education component called TOVAH (Teaching Our Values And Heritage).
Early
this month MJTI offered a course entitled, ?Messianic Jewish Theology:
God and Messiah,? taught by Dr. Mark Kinzer. Dr. Kinzer is the author
of Post-missionary Messianic Judaism, just released by a major
Christian publisher. The book explores the key role of the Messianic
Jewish community in relationship to both Christianity and Judaism. It
is brilliant, lucid, controversial at times, and sure to expand the
entire discussion of church-synagogue relationships.
In early February, MJTI will offer a course on Jewish History by Israeli Messianic Jewish scholar Tsvi Sadan, and another on rabbinic literature by Carl Kinbar. As with Dr. Kinzer?s class, these are high level graduate courses that will prepare our leaders to interact with the most important issues in the Jewish world. You can learn more at www.MJTI.org.
In addition to classes like these, the UMJC continues to provide resources and experiences for children, youth, and young adults that include major educational components. In all of this, our aim is to see lives touched and transformed in the power of Messiah. As another of the ancient rabbis said, ?One whose wisdom exceeds his deeds, to what shall he be compared? To a tree with many branches and few roots, so that when the wind comes, it uproots it and overturns it upon its face, as it is said, ?For he shall be like a tamarisk in the desert, and shall not see when good comes?? (Jeremiah 17:6). But one whose deeds exceed his wisdom, to what shall he be compared? To a tree with few branches and many roots. Even if all the winds in the world come and blow upon it, they move it not out of its place, as it is said, ?For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters that spreads out its roots by the river ? and shall not cease from yielding fruit?? ((Jeremiah 17:8).
May we always be fruitful as we both learn and practice the ways of Messiah Yeshua!

We
are also providing more practical education. I?ve developed a course
for TOVAH on Messianic Jewish Pastoral Care. Last month I led a
day-long segment of the class in New York on ministry to the sick,
dying, and bereaved. It draws upon the riches of Jewish tradition as
well as the presence of Messiah to serve Jewish individuals and
families. This month I teach a similar course on marriage and family in
Richmond, Virginia. Check out
